10 Reasons to Lose Weight & Improve Your Weight Loss
By Mac Brigg

There are many reasons why someone wants to lose weight and in general it is an entirely personal thing. The list below gives the more common reasons, but if yours aren’t listed here make sure you write them down because they can be used as clearly identifiable goals to help with your committment and motivation.

1. To Improve your Health

This is the single-most important reason to lose weight and in fact is the most common motivation behind a person’s decision to do so. It isn’t as easy as it sounds though – just as with someone that is struggling to stop smoking or drinking too much, the health benefits can sometimes take a back seat to the addiction. It takes a brave individual to stand up and face the fact that if they don’t lose weight, they’ll be more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, type II diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease. Scary stuff indeed.

2. To Improve your Fitness

Of course this is linked to the above, but some people use it as a motivation in itself. It is embarassing to be breathless and sweaty after simply walking up a flight of stairs, or perhaps even to find yourself struggling for breath walking normally.

By losing weight you will have less excess weight to carry around and, if done properly, you’ll be healthier and fitter.

3. Having More Energy

Carrying around a lot of excess weight is a tiring business! Not only that, but if you’re overweight the chances are that you tend to eat stodgy, unhealthy foods that make you tired rather than raring to go. Many people are astounded by how much more energy they have once they have lost weight: they find their quality of work improves, they are able to play with their kids for longer, and they’re able to go out more without fear of being lethargic. These improvements therefore not only benefit the person who has lost weight, but also benefits those around them.

4. Fitting into Clothes

Many overweight people live in denial about what size clothes they should wear. It’s understandable: by accepting that you’re a size 18 or even a 20, you’re admitting to yourself that you’re fat and you have a problem. So a lot of people go around wearing ill-fitting clothes that are extremely uncomfortable (try eating a big meal in a pair of jeans that cut into your waist!).

By losing weight, you no longer have to pretend that you’re a size smaller than you actually are! Imagine what that can do for your confidence.

5. Buying the Clothes you Like ….

This should have been titled ‘Buying the clothes you like, not what you can fit into’. Many clothes shops (particularly those selling the current trends) don’t cater for the larger lady or gentleman and, as such, a fat person’s choices are limited. It’s not nice buying an item of clothing that you wouldn’t ordinarily buy if you were thin ….

It’s not only a matter of what clothes you can fit into – the whole shopping experience for many a fat person is not a pleasant one. You have to try on clothes that you know you don’t look great in, because no matter what you wear, you still look fat. And your choice of clothing (unless you’re happy with your weight) is likely to be something that covers you up and helps you blend in with the crowd.

By losing the weight, you can go into any clothes shop and buy any item of clothing that takes your fancy – what a great motivation that is!

6. Improved Confidence

If you’re fat and happy, that’s great. But if you’re fat and unhappy, you’re likely to be unconfident and self-conscious. Being fat is not acceptable in our society and whilst no one should worry about what anyone else thinks, nor give in to the demands of what is considered ‘attractive’, unfortunately fat people are often looked down upon. So if you’re conscious of what other people think of you, you’re not going to enjoy being fat. Fat people are often considered less trust-worthy (if they can’t even look after themselves, how can they be trusted), lazy, devoid of willpower and – dare I say it – unattractive.

All of these (and more) serve to make a fat person unconfident and this can affect them in all walks of life. Whilst no one should lose weight in order to please other people, improved confidence is a very common reason for losing weight. Imagine being free of the burden of self-doubt by losing weight – that is life-changing.

7. Looking Forward to Social Events

By losing weight, imagine how you’ll feel next time you’re invited to a big social event. You won’t have the dread, the self-consciousness, and the embarassment of being fat. Instead you can look forward to receiving lots of compliments!

8. Mental Health

Being unhappy with your weight is quite a burden, not least for all the reasons mentioned above. Your weight is a constant stress and you may even feel guilty that you’re punishing your body for your inability to control your food intake.

By losing weight, you are likely to become more self-confident and you can be proud of yourself knowing that you’re not eating your way into an early grave. How’s that for motivation!

9. Better Sex

Whether single or in a long-term relationship, people often say that their sex lives improved once they lost weight. Whether being lighter and fitter simply makes you feel more active and adventurous, or whether relieving yourself of the burden of feeling unattractive and self-conscious is the cause, it’s certainly a great motivation to lose those pounds!

10. Looking Forward to Summer

It’s summer and it’s hot and that means two things: firstly, you have to wear fewer clothes and thus expose yourself more. Imagine the stress that this causes a fat person – you don’t want to wear shorts because you don’t want people to see your fat legs; you don’t want to wear a sleeveless top because you don’t want people to see your fat arms, but where does this leave you? You can’t cover up too much, because then you’re making a clear statement that you’re fat and don’t want to be seen.

Secondly, the heat makes a fat person hotter and more uncomfortable than a slimmer person – fat provides a great insulation material! This means spending the summer uncomfortable and it isn’t pleasant.

Now we get on to the subject of holidays – oh what a nightmare that is for a fat person. If you go somewhere even hotter than you’re used to, the above problems are exacerbated. And then you need to consider how you’re going to cope with wearing a swimsuit / pair of trunks …. no further explanation needed!

So lose that weight and you won’t need to dread summer – simple as that!
